We interviewed Natalie Fermoyle of Bella Life Style for her style suggestions on colour palettes, décor and furniture design. Here’s what Natalie had to say.
What style trends (or predictions) have you inspired at the moment?
I’m a big fan of Minimalism, Luxe and the continuation of the Nordic influence on furniture design, decor accessories and colour palettes.
I believe grey tones will lead the way as our neutral, while navy blue, ink and black will create contrast.
Subtle and playful pastels will soften spaces for a serene balance and metallics will continue with modern florals and bold botanic prints gaining momentum.
Plenty of chalky white will provide a soft and calm colour palette for walls and sheer curtains while dramatic feature fabrics will take centre stage on occasional chairs, ottomans and cushion clusters.
Can you share your journey as an interior designer? Do you have any interesting stories you’d like to share?
When I was young I would design furniture pieces for my dolls house from items I found around the house. I grew up with a super mum who hosted a business breakfast club, worked a full day and always found time to arrange the cushions before she went to bed!
I have always appreciated beauty around me and have enjoyed creating beautiful spaces for everyone I work with. Some of my best growth experiences have been the result of solving problems. Maturity has taught me that If I don’t know the answer to a question it is better to find out or opt out. Finding solutions to design dilemmas keeps me learning and happy.
Do you have any tips on how a customer should choose fabrics, leathers, colour palettes and designs. What should they look out for or keep in mind?
I believe there are three important elements in making a room interesting: colour, pattern and texture. I recommend applying this approach when selecting fabrics.
Your patterned fabrics will create a theme and colour palette for you to then select your co-ordinating block colour and textured fabrics.
Feature chairs, ottomans and cushions provide a great opportunity to contrast colour and patterns, and larger furniture items (such as sofas) work best with subtle textures and in neutral or dark tones so they can stand the test of time.
What is your favourite Torrance & McKenna design and how would you customise it?
My favourite design at the moment is the Alpine Sofa and Occasional Chair. I love the Nordic inspired design with pin legs that create a light, modern look.
I would love to see this sofa upholstered in Warwick Levi, in colour Denim, with the occasional chair in Warwick Levi, in colour Orchid. Then I would add a mixed collection of cushions to complete this Spring Nordic look.
